Make no mistake about it, part of the reason Germany thrived during the Second World War was down to their modern engineering and advanced weaponry. The Germans produced rockets, tanks, guns, and aircraft that were way ahead of the curve and it took a long time for the rest of the world to catch up.
Secretly behind closed doors, Hitler's Nazi engineers and scientists were working on advanced futuristic weaponry which even by today’s standards is quite incredible. Here are a few mind blowing examples of just how far ahead of the game Nazi Germany were.
Horten Ho 229 Bomber
The Horten Ho 229 Bomber, otherwise known as the "flying wing" was one of Nazi Germany’s most lethal weapons. The impressive looking Horten Ho was first flown in 1944 and could carry up to 2,000lbs of bombs, reach speeds of 600mph, and fly at 49,000ft above ground level. The bomber was equipped with two powerful cannons, R4M rockets, and futuristic twin turbojet engines. It’s easy to see where the inspiration for the US Stealth Bomber came from looking at this incredible plane.
The Fritz X Smart Bomb
The Fritz X was one of Hitler’s best kept secrets and considered to be the first ever guided smart bomb. The Fritz X was guided by radio and used to strike and destroy battleships. The glide bomb carried over 700lbs of explosives and could penetrate 28-inches of heavy armor no problem.
The Schwerer Gustav, as you can clearly see, is the largest cannon ever made by man . Incredibly the Germans built two of these cannons which were designed to run on railway tracks. This super heavy railway gun weighed a cool 1350 tonnes, and fired 7 tonne shells up to a range of 29 miles.
Thankfully we don’t see any of these around today, although there’s a high possibility someone has taken this technology and developed it a bit further. The sonic cannon was said to be so powerful it could literally shake a person to pieces, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but it could certainly cause a lot of damage to an individual . Developed by Nazi engineers in the 1940s, the cannon fired a pulse of amplified sound that would cause vertigo and other undesirable effects for the intended target. Considering that everything in the universe is held together by frequencies and vibration, this is one type of weapon that you’ll never want to come across in your lifetime.
Silbervogel in German means “silver bird” and was the name given to this secret futuristic rocket-powered suborbital bomber. Built in the 1930s, this low space plane was intended to be used as a long-distance bomber capable of bombing New York from Germany. The Silbervogel was said to have a special surveillance system on-board and was undetectable by radar. The Nazi’s had a hard time developing it due to it being so far ahead of its time. Many failed tests took place and further development was eventually halted in 1942 to save money. If the Nazi’s had successfully completed the testing and development of this aircraft, then world might have been a very different place today.
